UNITY's Prison Work

We have been working with Foreign National prisoners at HMP Frankland prison. Our work varies from general advice relating to internal matters and immigration issues.

  • We liase with the Home Office to assist Foreign National Prisoners who have served their sentence and wish to be deported. This includes dealing with their travel documents and other relevant arrangements.

  • We approach appropriate governors within the prison to negotiate solutions for those prisoners who have internal complaints in relation to their food, faith and discrimination issues.

  • We provide general advice where a prisoner thinks he has received unfair justice, as his legal representatives had not dealt with his case properly, in helping to re-open their case.

  • We also provide a counselling service to the family members via telephone reassuring them of the well being of the prisoner especially those who cannot visit within UK and abroad because of distance.

  • We attend regular meetings through request from foreign national prisoners as legal advisors, most are able to communicate in their own language which helps reassure them that they have been heard and some action will be taken.

  • Once a month we attend the Race Equality Action Team meeting, which is held in the prison attended by Governors, Prison Staff, Faith Leaders and Prisoner reps to high light issues that have been raised by the prisoners.

We also act as external verifiers for complaints made within the prison by staff or prisoners.
