With financial support from Sunderland City Council Play Grant Awards we were able to hold cultural awareness workshops at Unity.

Purpose: educate children through fun and creative learning about the different cultures residing in Sunderland and look at some of the traditions and similarities.

Aim: Hold a number of group sessions using arts and crafts; making cards, pictures and models symbolising various cultures and sharing information about the importance behind them. Using a variety of art techniques they had an opportunity to taste different foods and try on various cultural dresses. Children had an opportunity to show and share their learning in a family fun day at the end of the project.

Objectives: To improve children’s understanding to create positive relationships and help with social development in a friendly, safe environment.

There have been requests from parents for more events of this kind as it proved to be valuable on an educational and social level. With more assistance going forward UNITY would be happy to organise these or similar events.
