About UNITY

Unity Multicultural Organisation is a registered charity working in what is usually referred to as the 'third sector'. In other words, it is a not-for-profit organisation.

Unity Multicultural Organisation has been established in Sunderland since 1980, and is a non-sectarian, multicultural centre that supports all faiths and cultures.

We were established in order to cater for the needs of the multicultural/multi-ethnic community in Sunderland. There were concerns amongst BME communities about the lack of awareness of multicultural issues within the statutory sector and other agencies.

We have been able to introduce new ideas to fill the gap for provisions within the local community.

We have helped authorities such as:

  • Social services
  • Education authorities
  • Housing and benefit agencies
  • The police and courts

By working with these agencies we have helped them to revise their policies in order to provide a better service to the whole community, and raising awareness of BME issues.

We are a community organisation that deals with a wide range of issues and provide a number of services.

Please visit our Services page for a full list of the services we provide.

Our organisation has provided religious education by holding assemblies in different schools and churches in the North East, with the aim to unite and improve understanding of multi-faith.

We have held lectures and seminars to promote multi-cultural awareness, and help reduce racial discrimination in the community. This was also celebrated through our Multicultural Festivals (Mela), which we had held for five consecutive years (please see Events page)

We hold workshops to encourage healthy eating and lifestyle for both children and adults. Past workshops have included:

  • Healthy Eating Tips and Tricks (for 4-12 year olds)
  • Women’s well being and beauty classes
  • Relaxation therapy classes
  • Women’s multicultural health day.

Other workshops included:

  • Sewing classes for beginners
  • Indian dance and exercise
  • English language classes.

Please visit our Events page for our forthcoming activities/events.
