UNITY ORGANISATION
MULTICULTURAL
NEWSLETTER

Message from the UNITY Chair Person, Mr Tahir Khan
Racism is a big issue in the United Kingdom. The City of Sunderland is no exception. Someone somewhere is either abused directly, or targeted by institutionalised racism.
Sunderland needs to show a better understanding of the problem to stamp out racism and exhibit zero tolerance. There is a need to establish a multicultural social network to enhance education and recognition for all residents in the city.
Unity endeavours to set up a multicultural network forum and would lke to see residents and authorities participating. Please contact Unity if you would like to help.
Unity Office Area Problems
Unity Organisation is in an area where dog fouling, litter and damage to wheelie bins are a problem. Wheelie bins have been set alight and cars damaged. We feel that this needs to be nipped in the bud before it gets any worse.

Government Needs to Reconsider
University of Sunderland showed great potential and attraction for international students in the year 2010. Students from all over the world came to study here especially from Asia and Africa. The University of Sunderland has improved its standards and facilities very much but unfortunately due to the change in immigration policy for international students; it has lost a great number of international students from countries like India and Pakistan. Changes in work permission for international students and Post Study Work Visa policy have made difficult for students from these countries to come and study in the UK. It will be helpful in this regard if the Government reconsider its above mentioned policy.

MEDEEHA APPEAL – Launched October 2011, still on-going
Donate to help Madeeha’s Medical need!
Imagine a child living his/her normal daily life happily one moment, only to have tragedy strike the next changing their life forever!
Madeeha was born in Middlesbrough in 1989 and at the age of 4 months moved to Pakistan with her mother. When she was 8 her dress caught fire from a burning candle and she sustained 70% burns to her body from her neck down. Her eyesight was also badly affected. This accident almost killed her.
For four months she was unable to eat orally and had to be fed intravenously and underwent deeply distressing treatment to her body. Her parents could not afford the treatment she needed so her grandparents in the UK paid for an Army Hospital to treat her. Later they paid for a hospital in Lahore to attempt to correct her vision problems but the consultant said it could not be done. Madeeha still has nightmares about these unfortunate events even today.
At the age of 16 she returned to Middlesbrough to live with her Grandparents who are now in their 90’s. Madeeha is now 22 and suffering a great deal of pain and discomfort.
The weather in Pakistan can reach temperatures of around 50°c, which irritates her skin causing it to break into blisters and start bleeding. The cooler, damper, UK climate has proven to be more suitable for her skin, so for this reason and others, Unity has been led to fighting and campaigning to help Madeeha gain a long term stay in the UK; dealing with the various authorities, medics, advisors and particularly the Home Office.
To deal with her Immigration Case and the First Phase of her Medical Treatment we need to raise thousands of pounds, which can give this young lady a bright and pain free future.
We need your kind help as the Home Office has told Madeeha she does not qualify for NHS treatment and must pay for it privately therefore any donation you could make, however generous or small will greatly benefit Madeeha and her situation.
